New Zealand Certificate in Steiner Teaching

This qualification is for teachers in Steiner schools across Aotearoa New Zealand who are looking for ways to build confidence and deepen their understanding of Steiner pedagogy as part of their ongoing development. The New Zealand Certificate in Steiner Teaching supports this by offering a flexible, nationally recognised learning pathway for teachers working in lower, middle or high school.

Sitting at Level 6 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, the certificate provides structured learning that strengthens professional practice, builds clarity around developmental and artistic principles, and supports teachers in maintaining the special character of Steiner schools nationwide.

Structure

The certificate is completed over two years. It is made up of microcredentials totalling 60 points – the equivalent of half a year of fulltime study – and forms a coherent professional pathway, with teachers able to progress through the modules at a pace that fits their school responsibilities and personal circumstances.

Some microcredentials are core requirements, while others allow teachers to tailor their study toward primary, middle or high school teaching, or toward particular subject areas.

There are two main types of microcredentials:

Theoretical modules

Delivered online, these modules give teachers a clear grounding in Steiner education by exploring its core principles, the role of the teacher and Steiner’s developmental picture of the child. Teachers learn how curriculum is structured, how main lessons and block teaching work, and how to apply developmental insights in a differentiated and contextual way. The modules also help teachers understand how Steiner education is expressed in different school settings and integrate their wider professional learning into classroom practice. Teachers have the opportunity to study an area relevant to their role or the needs of the school.

Practical modules

These are completed in the teacher’s own school with supported mentoring and provide a framework through which teachers can show how their Steiner teaching practice is developing in their own context. While some new perspectives and approaches will be introduced, the focus is on helping teachers work with these ideas in ways that make sense for their class, subject and stage of learning. The modules recognize how teachers shape rhythmic and coherent lessons, use artistic and experiential approaches, meet developmental needs from lower school to high school, and hold appropriate authority in the classroom. They give teachers structured opportunities to demonstrate how their practice is growing stronger, more intentional and more aligned with the special character principles of Steiner education.

Some microcredentials are core requirements, while others allow teachers to focus on primary, middle or high school, or the teaching of specific subject areas.

What teachers will gain

By completing the certificate, teachers will strengthen their understanding of Steiner’s developmental and pedagogical principles, build confidence in designing and delivering developmentally appropriate lessons, and extend and deepen their use of artistic and reflective practices. They will grow more confident in understanding what supports their students’ learning, noticing their own professional growth and adapting Steiner pedagogy to the cultural contexts of contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to be relevant to teachers’ everyday work and manageable within the realities of a busy school week. Depending on the microcredential, they may involve project work, lesson design, portfolios, classroom observations, recorded teaching, reflective writing or guided professional conversations.

Delivery and support

The qualification will be delivered by the Steiner Education Development Trust (SEDT), an NZQA registered provider. Its development is led by Dr Neil Boland, who has extensive national and international experience in Steiner teacher education. Quality assurance will be undertaken by SEDT.

Pathways beyond the certificate

After completing the Level 6 certificate, teachers can progress to a planned Level 7 qualification, designed for those moving into leadership or specialist roles, as well as for more experienced practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding of Steiner education.
